Watch a sneak peek of some of the fun our FLL Explore students will be having this year with the SUBMERGED theme!

About FLL Explore

FIRST LEGO League Explore is a hands-on program designed to inspire, excite, and introduce kids in grades 2-3 to the wonders of science, technology, and engineering in teams of up to six children. This program features a real-world challenge explored through research, critical thinking, and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the FIRST Core Values, team members work with LEGO elements and motorized parts to build ideas and concepts and present them for review. FIRST LEGO League Explore:

  • Teaches the benefits of teamwork

  • Sparks initial interest in science and technology

  • Introduces basic design skills through a hands-on approach with the familiarity and fun of LEGO building; and

  • Provides a culture of sharing and learning from others.

The culmination of the hard work for many teams is the participation in a FIRST LEGO League Explore event. Volunteer Reviewers at the event interview teams to learn about their LEGO Model and Show Me poster. All the teams are celebrated and leave with an award.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - PLEASE READ

When do you meet?

Our FLL Explore teams meet on the 2nd & 4th Fridays of the month from 6:00-7:30 pm. The first meeting of the season is the 4th Friday of August, and the last meeting is the 4th Friday of April. The teams will attend a festival in April 2025, and we will end the season with a big celebration on Sunday May 4, 2025 3:00-5:00 pm .

Where do you meet?

All FLL Explore meetings are held in Maglaras Hall at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church at 1700 10th Avenue in Broomfield, Colorado. Holy Comforter is our generous host, but our team is not religiously oriented, and people of all or no faith backgrounds are welcome.

How much does it cost to participate?

The cost per student is $75/semester, due June1st and December 1st. Payment plans and scholarships are available upon request. We never want cost to be a barrier to participation.

Student Fees help cover part of the cost of team and festival registrations, robots and materials. The rest of the cost is paid for through individual donations, grants, and corporate sponsorships. Any help parents can provide with finding these additional sources of funding is most appreciated!

Who should join FLL Explore?

Anyone in grades 2 or 3! We believe ALL young students can thrive in STEM, and we strongly encourage girls, students of color, students who are neuro-diverse, and students who are still learning English to join our teams as well. All are welcome, and no previous robotics or coding experience is necessary.

What are the attendance expectations for students?

We believe that consistency is an important part of building strong team relationships, so we expect our team members to attend regularly and participate fully. While we are flexible in attendance so that our members can prioritize their health, education and family, we ask that if your student and family cannot commit to attending at least 75% of the meetings, you discuss this with us prior to joining to the team.

Does my student have to participate in both semesters?

Yes. FLL Explore students work all year on their skills and project, and present their work at a festival in April.

Is transportation provided to meetings, field trips or festivals?

No. Transportation of FLL students is the responsibility of the families so transportation is not provided. If this presents a challenge for you, please contact us to see if arrangements can be made with another family.

When and how do I join?

FLL Explore students are encouraged to start FLL Explore in the fall of their 2nd or 3rd grade year. As of July 2024, all of our FLL Explore teams for the 2024-2025 season are full. When spots become available, students will be selected off the wait list based on the grade and gender balances of the teams, if other siblings or parents are enrolled with Broomfield STEM, and the length of time a student has been on the wait list. If your student is not already enrolled in Early Engineers or FLL Explore with Broomfield STEM, and wants to participate in FLL Explore during the 2025-2026 season, please use the button above to add them the wait list now.

Can parents be mentors?

Yes! We are currently recruiting more mentors as we expand the number of teams we support, and we welcome parents to be mentors. We ask all mentors, including parent mentors, to commit to attending all meetings, go through our application and screening process, and complete our trainings. Please refer to the mentor page for more information.

My name is Erik and I have 3 kids in Broomfield Robotics. I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, and I am working on a master's degree in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech online. I have worked in the aerospace industry since graduating in 2018. I worked at a tutoring company in high school where I tutored K-12 students in math. In my free time I enjoy camping, traveling, and spending time with my kids.

  • Iros

My son has been on the First Tech Challenge robotics team for two years and I have been a volunteer with the team and for FIRST throughout that time. I was born in Sri Lanka and studied Computer Engineering there. After moving to the US, I worked as a technician for several Engineering firms. Currently I am a technician at Veiolia. Some of my hobbies are camping, hiking, and fishing.

Both of my children love Broomfield Robotics! I used to be CNA at Balfour working with elderly people. Then I changed my career to work with kids. I started to volunteer in school, Sunday school and Sister Carmen helping the kids. I enjoy working with kids, helping them and teaching them.
